Diwali Safety for Pets

As we celebrate Diwali next week Tuesday, we would like to remind everyone about firework safety for your pets and animals in your area.

CATS:

Prepare well in advance. Always keep your cat indoors with litter trays, food, and water. Close curtains, windows, and doors. Use background noise or soft music to mask firework sounds. Comfort them — but only if they want it. Create a safe space with familiar bedding, use toys, treats, or pheromones to help distract them. Monitor, modify, maintain, and never punish! Also, check your garden for anything that could injure your cat.

DOGS:

Before fireworks begin, take your dog for a walk well before dark. Ensure they’re well exercised and have had a toilet break. Feed them before fireworks start, as fear may cause loss of appetite. Make sure your home and garden are secure — frightened dogs may try to escape. Settle them in a familiar, safe space before the noise begins. Close the curtains, turn on the lights, and use the TV or radio to help mask sounds.

During fireworks, don’t punish your dog for cowering or reacting — it only increases fear. Stay calm and be a good role model. If your dog comes to you for comfort, interact gently and calmly. Don’t leave your dog alone at home, as panic could cause injury. Keep them busy with games or reward-based training to distract them. However, if they prefer to hide, allow them to stay where they feel safe.

Let’s make this Diwali a safe and happy one for everyone — both humans and animals!
